Slim Steel Windows & Doors: the Crittall-Style Look

About Slim Steel Windows & Doors

Slim black frames divided by fine glazing bars are what most people mean by Crittall-style glazing: the industrial steel windows of the early twentieth century, now used for kitchen extensions, internal screens, loft conversions, restaurants and office fit-outs. We supply and install the look in genuine thermally insulated steel, using the Jansen Janisol Arte 2.0 system for windows, doors and sliding doors. Steel is stiff enough to keep its face widths to around 40 mm while carrying insulating glass units of 20 to 34 mm, and Janisol Arte sliding units can reach 3,000 by 2,500 mm with leaves of up to 150 kg, subject to configuration. Where a screen or door also has to resist fire, Jansen Janisol 2 is tested to EI30, so a fire door can share the same slim steel look as the glazing around it. The photographs here are from our Pavilion project in London, which shows the style: long runs of slim black glazed doors and screens with glazing bars opening onto a garden terrace. Each opening is drawn, fabricated and installed to measure, and we will advise on whether steel or a slim aluminium system suits the budget and performance needed.
