Choosing roof lanterns, rooflights & winter gardens

Overhead glazing brings far more daylight into a room than windows in the walls, which is why roof glazing is so often part of a kitchen extension or a room set back from the garden.

We supply three types. Aluminium roof lanterns rise above the roof in a slim pitched frame and give a view of the sky from below. Flat rooflights sit almost level with the roof, glazed edge to edge, where a lantern would be too tall or too visible. Schüco CMC 50 HI winter gardens go further, turning a whole room into an insulated glazed space you can use all year.

As a rule of thumb, choose a lantern when you want height and a view of the sky in the middle of a large flat roof, a flat rooflight when the glazing should sit low and stay out of sight from the garden or the street, and a winter garden when the whole room is glazed. Flat rooflights run from 750mm square up to 1.5m by 3m; lanterns are made to the size of the roof opening.

Roof glazing must meet Building Regulations for thermal performance and safety glazing, and the structural opening has to be designed correctly, so we confirm those requirements for each project. Everything is made to measure and installed across London and the South East, usually alongside the bifold or sliding doors on the same extension, so the frame colours can be chosen together.
