Choosing aluminium entrance & front doors
A front door has to look right, keep the weather out, insulate and secure the house, and keep doing all four through years of daily use. Aluminium does that with slimmer frames than timber or uPVC, and it can be powder coated to match the windows and doors on the rest of the house.
The range runs from Schüco and Cortizo front doors to Aluprof panel doors, where the leaf is faced with an insulated decorative panel: the MB-79N, the deeper MB-86N and the MB-104 Passive for low-energy houses. The MB-86N pivot door turns on an off-centre pivot for very large entrances, up to 2m wide and 3.4m high, and aluminium French doors open a room onto the garden.
Three things narrow the choice. Security: multi-point locking is standard, and on a new home the front door has to meet the Part Q security requirement, usually shown by testing to PAS 24, as the Schüco front doors are. Insulation: in England a replacement external door in an existing home needs a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or better under Approved Document L, and the Aluprof MB-86N and MB-104 Passive are rated from 0.62 W/m²K for low-energy builds. Size and style: a flush slab, a glazed door with side panels, or a tall panel or pivot door for a statement entrance.
