Choosing architectural aluminium windows

Architectural aluminium window systems are specified for offices, schools, apartment schemes and mixed-use buildings as well as homes: slim, strong frames that carry large and heavy glass, ribbon windows that run between curtain walling and brickwork, and performance that can be calculated and evidenced for the specification. We supply and install them for main contractors and architects as part of a wider glazing package, and for homeowners on their own.

Aluminium windows give slimmer frames and more glass than uPVC, keep their shape with little upkeep, and can be powder coated in any RAL colour, with a different colour inside and out if you like. Modern thermally broken systems with double or triple glazing perform well thermally, so the choice mostly comes down to how the window opens and how it looks.

Our range covers the main types: tilt and turn windows on the Schüco AWS 70.HI and the Cortizo Arch Invisible with its hidden handle; the Schüco AWS 70.HI for highly insulated casements and ribbon windows; the Schüco AWS 70 SC for economical outward-opening windows; and Cortizo 4900 sliding windows where an opening sash would get in the way, on homes and on commercial buildings alike. Where the design calls for the fine lines of a steel window, we use Jansen Janisol Arte 2.0 instead.

A window system is the family of matched profiles, gaskets and hardware that every window on the job is built from, so choosing the system first keeps sightlines, colour and performance consistent across a house or a whole elevation. The figure that matters for the energy target is the whole-window U-value (Uw), which depends on the frame, the glass and the window size, so we confirm it with the quote. In England, a replacement window in an existing home needs a Uw of 1.4 W/m²K or better, or a Window Energy Rating of band B, under Approved Document L; on new homes, easily accessible windows also have to meet the Part Q security requirement, usually shown by testing to PAS 24.
