About Fire Rated Doors
Fire rated doors are doorsets tested to hold back fire and smoke for a classified period, and BDF Architectural supplies and installs fire rated aluminium and steel doors for commercial, healthcare and high-rise residential projects across London and the UK. The classification for each door is set by the fire strategy and confirmed at technical review against the system's test evidence.
Our aluminium fire doors combine that classification with the thermal, acoustic and security performance expected of a premium commercial entrance, with slim sightlines and concealed hardware. Where a slimmer steel door is specified we supply Jansen Janisol 2, thermally insulated and tested to EI30, with smoke control, panic and emergency exit and burglar resistance options within its tested scope, and Jansen-Economy 50 and 60 for further slim steel fire door configurations.
A fire door is only as good as the complete doorset. Doorsets are tested to EN 1634, and the leaf, frame, glass, seals, hinges, closer, lock and any panic or emergency exit hardware are part of that tested assembly, so the hardware set is chosen with the door rather than added later. Fire doors are normally self-closing, and on escape routes the exit hardware follows the fire strategy.

Common questions about Fire Rated Doors.
What fire rating do commercial fire doors need?
It is set by the fire strategy for each door, following Approved Document B in England. Doorsets are tested to EN 1634 and classified as E or EI for a period in minutes, often with a smoke control classification as well. The Jansen Janisol 2 steel doors we supply are tested to EI30.
What is the difference between FD30 and EI30?
FD30 is the British Standard (BS 476-22) designation for a door that keeps its integrity for 30 minutes, and FD30S means it also limits cold smoke. EI30 is the European classification (BS EN 13501-2) for 30 minutes of both integrity and insulation. Which classification is accepted for a particular door is for the fire strategy and building control to confirm.
Can fire doors have panic or emergency exit hardware?
Yes, where the fire strategy needs it. Panic hardware to BS EN 1125 is used where members of the public may use the exit, and emergency exit hardware to BS EN 179 where the users know the building. On a fire door the hardware must be within the doorset's tested scope; Jansen Janisol 2 offers panic and emergency exit options within its tested scope.
Can fire rated doors be glazed?
Yes. Glazed aluminium and steel fire doors are common in corridors, lobbies and entrances. The glass, beads and seals are part of the tested doorset, so the glass size and type must stay within the test evidence for the classification.
Can fire doors and a glazed screen be supplied as one system?
Yes. Fire doors often sit in a glazed screen, so we supply the doors and the fire rated screen around them in matching frame systems as one package. The doorset is tested to EN 1634-1 and the screen to EN 1364-1, and the way the door is set into the screen must also be covered by the test evidence, so the two are designed together. In slim steel, Jansen Janisol 2 doors and partitions are tested to EI30.
Can a fire door also be secure and accessible?
Yes. The fire doors we supply offer burglary and vandalism protection options, sound reduction and barrier-free threshold options alongside the fire classification, and Janisol 2 has burglar resistance options within its tested scope. Fire, security and access requirements are checked together at technical review.
