If you are choosing premium aluminium doors for your home, two names come up again and again: Schüco and Cortizo. Both are excellent European systems and you would be happy with either — but they have different strengths. Here is an honest, homeowner-friendly comparison to help you pick the right one for your project.
The short answer
Schüco is the established German premium brand — polished, refined and reassuringly engineered. Cortizo is a Spanish system that delivers very slim, contemporary styling and large glass areas at a noticeably lower price. Many homeowners choose Cortizo for sliding doors and feel they have still bought a premium product, while Schüco remains a favourite for its brand pedigree and refined feel.
Sightlines — it depends on the door type
Sightlines are the width of the aluminium you see between panes of glass — slimmer is generally more desirable. Interestingly, the winner flips depending on the door: for sliding doors, Cortizo is slimmer (the Cor Vision Plus has around a 20mm central join, among the slimmest on the UK market, versus roughly 30mm on Schüco’s panorama slider). For bifold doors, Schüco tends to be slimmer at the meeting points. So if a wall of minimal-frame sliding glass is the goal, Cortizo often has the edge; for bifolds, the two are very close.
Price
Cortizo is typically the more cost-effective of the two — industry sources commonly put it around 20–30% lower than Schüco for an equivalent installed product. That gap can be significant enough to free up budget for upgraded glazing, a better threshold detail or matching windows. Schüco generally carries a price premium for its brand and engineering reputation.
Everyday feel and performance
Both systems are thermally broken, secure and meet UK Building Regulations with appropriate glazing. Schüco is often described as feeling slightly more refined in daily operation, which appeals to buyers happy to pay for that reassurance. Cortizo offers the same core engineering quality with standout contemporary looks. In normal home use, both will perform excellently for decades.
Which should you choose?
- Choose Schüco if: you want an established premium German brand, a slightly more refined feel, and brand pedigree — and you are comfortable paying a premium
- Choose Cortizo if: you want the slimmest sliding-door sightlines, large glass areas and strong value for money without giving up a premium finish
