Bifold Doors vs Sliding Doors: Which is Right for Your Home?

ComparisonPublished 5 December 2025By BDF Architectural

Bifold doors and sliding doors are both excellent choices for opening up a home to the garden or outdoors, but they work very differently and suit different situations. At BDF Architectural we supply and install both, so here is our honest, unbiased comparison.

How They Work

Bifold doors fold back on themselves, stacking neatly to one or both sides of the opening. Sliding doors run on tracks and slide horizontally, with panels stacking behind each other or into a pocket. Both can be fully aluminium framed with floor-to-ceiling glazing.

Maximum Opening Width

Bifold doors can cover openings up to around 6m wide with five panels. Sliding doors can cover much wider spans — some systems accommodate openings of 10m or more — making them the better choice for large commercial or open-plan spaces.

Sightlines and Glass Area

Sliding doors typically offer better sightlines when closed because they have fewer vertical frame members than bifold doors. Premium sliding door systems like Schuco ASS 70 achieve very slim profiles. When open, bifold doors give a wider unobstructed opening relative to their total width.

Space Requirements

Sliding doors require no inward or outward swing clearance — they simply slide along the wall. Bifold doors need a small amount of clearance as panels fold. If space is very tight on either the interior or exterior, sliding doors may be the better option.

Cost Comparison

For comparable specifications, bifold doors are generally slightly more affordable than premium sliding doors across most width ranges. However, for very wide openings, sliding doors can be more cost-effective as they require fewer panels.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose bifold doors if: you want a wide open space for entertaining, have a medium-sized opening (2–6m), and want a classic, popular look
  • Choose sliding doors if: you have a very wide opening, want the slimmest possible sightlines, or have limited space on either side of the opening
